Edward Bach himself was diagnosed with terminal cancer at the age of 31, but recovered his health after resolving to spend his remaining time researching a new approach to medicine. His devoted work led to discovery of the 38 flower remedies. In his classic short text Heal Thyself (1931) Bach explains disease in terms of a learning experience, an opportunity for positive transformation and reorientation to one’s true path.

Dr Bach based his work on a profound philosophy:

  • Life is seen as a learning process  Ill health, whether mental or physical, is to help us understand more about ourselves and the purpose of our lives
  • Health is achieved through harmony between our physical and spiritual selves, so the body can be free to begin its own natural healing process
  • The mind and body will remain in a state of health, if emotional equilibrium can be maintained
How to take the Bach Flower Remedies:
  • Dilute two drops of the remedy in a glass of water and sip at intervals  (*4 drops for Rescue Remedy)
  • For multiple use add two drops of each chosen remedy (no more than seven) to a 30 ml bottle, top up with mineral water and take four drops at least four times a day
  • If necessary the Bach Flower Remedies can be dropped neat onto the tongue, or rubbed onto the lips, behind the ears, or on the temples and wrists
  • Bach Flower Remedies can be used as often as desired. In a crisis you may need only one dose but for a continuing emotional problem you can take them for as long as needed

How to choose the right Bach Flower Remedies for you:

Recognizing exactly how you feel is the key to selecting the appropriate Bach Flower Remedy for you.  Match the exact mood you are in with the suitable remedy.

Dr. Bach devised seven general emotional groups under which he categorized 38 individual flower remedies, each of which relates to a specific emotional state, as per the following:

(Hiding behind a smile)  (Fear of unknown)  (Intolerance)  (Can't say no)  (Lack of self trust)  (Reaching breaking point)  (Not learning from mistakes)   (Possessive love)  (Not living in the present) (Cleansing)  (Overwhelmed)  (Discouraged) (Despair)  (Jealousy) (Living in the past)  (Procrastination) (Impatience)   (Lack of confidence)  (Phobias)  (Melancholia)  (Never gives up) (Over concern) (Terror)  (Self denial)  (Difficulty making choices)  (Shock)  (Extreme anguish)  (Over enthusiasm)  (Inflexibility)  (Protection from unwanted influences)  (Exhaustion)  (Pride)  (Guilt) (Unwanted thoughts)

 (A)  (B)   (C)   (E)   (G)  (H)  (I)   (L)  (M)  (O)  (P)   (R)  (S)  (V) (W)

Much research supports the idea that psychological factors affect physical health, besides being worthwhile for its own sake. Bach flower remedies are safe to combine them with other treatments and they have no side-effects (except possibly in cases where alcohol is forbidden - this is because they contain traces of brandy as a preservative). It is important to understand that they are complementary, not alternative, to conventional medicine and that they do not offer direct treatments for specific diseases.

The mind-body link is extremely complex, our emotional state directly impacts our physiology, which includes the neurological, endocrine and immune systems. This leads to behavioural choices which affect our health; and changes the way we perceive and respond to bodily sensations. According to the Law of Attraction, what is radiated by our thoughts and feelings acts like a magnet therefore drawing our negative or positive traits which manifest through other people into our life. It follows that too much focus on illness-related issues will not help the healing process, and that personal energies are better channelled in more creative ways.

With Bach Flower remedies the choice of essence always depends on how the unique individual is feeling, rather than being standardized and being honest about how you are really feeling is important. Some clients want to go very deep to identify the core issue to help reverse any long-standing characteristics which might have contributed to becoming ill in the first place.

Bach’s insights in this field have been validated by research showing that chronic negative mental states such as depression, hopelessness, and hostility – when combined with biological factors – carry a raised risk of physical illness.

With the Bach system the emotional history does not require detailed deep analysis, but is a gentle process with its own natural pace. Different flowers may be needed to deal with the layers of a problem as they are revealed: ‘peeling the onion’.
